Lactic Acid: What It Is, How To Get Rid Of Lactic Acid

What is lactic acid?

Recoup - March 29 2022

Mactic acid (lactic acidosis) is a byproduct of glucose and various other carbohydrates in cells, especially in muscle cells. Lactic acid buildup causes pain, muscle fatigue, and delayed onset muscle soreness during high-intensity exercise because it binds to proteins and impairs their function. Lactic acid flush is a technique that you can do before or after your workout session to reduce the amount of lactic acid buildup that is produced. Lactic acidosis happens during intense exercise. Lactic acid flush is said to help improve performance and prevent pain and muscle soreness.

What Is Lactic Acid and How Does It Happen

Lactic acidosis occurs when lactic acid production exceeds lactic acid clearance creating excess lactate. The increase in lactate production is usually caused by impaired tissue oxygenation, either from decreased oxygen delivery or a defect in mitochondrial oxygen utilization. The human body produces Lactic Acid buildup during high intensity workouts because it binds to proteins and impairs their functionality to produce oxygen. Some symptoms of lactic acid buildup are burning sensation, muscular fatigue, delayed onset muscle soreness, and muscle pain.

Increased lactate production happens within the body during high intensity workouts, lifting heavy weights, strenuous exercises and aerobic exercises. When doing these hard workouts, the muscle fibers need more energy to keep going. If the muscle cells do not receive the required oxygen, an unpleasant burning sensation occurs due to acid collecting within the muscle.

How To Get Rid of Lactic Acid

One way to get rid of Lactic acid is by drinking lots of water. When you drink water, it helps to dilute the lactic acid and flush it out of the body. Water supplies the much-needed oxygen and hydrogen ions to the blood. Hydration is key to lowering lactic acid levels because water is supplying what the muscle cell crave, Oxygen and Hydrogen ions. That thirst for water during an exercise routine is the body informing you; your muscles need more oxygen.

The second way to clear lactate is using compression before or after a workout. Compression squeezes the blood vessels pushing out metabolic waste and old stagnant blood. Once compression is reduced, the blood vessels expand further than before, introducing a new supply of oxygen rich blood flow.

The third flush of metabolic byproduct is using heat before heavy exercise and cold therapy after. Heat wakes up sore, stiff muscles by activating them through increased blood flow. This activation will improve performance and decrease injury risk. After a hard workout, the nervous system goes crazy, causing a burning sensation. Using cold therapy after an exercise calms down the nervous system slowing blood flow. Once the muscles rewarm, they open up wider than before, increasing oxygen-rich blood flow for a better flush.

Benefits of flushing Lactic Acid

  • Improved Performance
  • Decreased Pain and Soreness
  • Prevention of Lactic Acid Build-Up
  • Better Hydration
  • Improved Circulation

How to avoid Lactic acid build-up:

  • Drink lots of water before and after your workout session
  • Use compression before or after a workout
  • Use heat before you work out and cold therapy after
  • Eat foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates
  • Improved Circulation

Foods that help reduce Lactic acid production

There are a few different types of foods that can help reduce Lactic acid production. Some of the best foods to eat are ones that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Protein-rich foods help to build and repair muscle tissue, which can help reduce Lactic acid production. Carbohydrates are a source of energy, and when you eat too many of them, your body produces Lactic acid as a byproduct. So, eating foods that are low in carbohydrates can help to reduce Lactic acid production. Some other good foods to eat that can help with Lactic acid production are fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are high in water content, which helps.
